IMPORTANT!!! How to Continue Following Your Favorite Blogs by Switching to Bloglovin’

Image
So my post last week was horrible timing!  The morning that I wrote the post I read that Google Reader wouldn't be supported anymore.  Of course I didn't read the article until the following day, but I soon realized my post was quite possible a waste since the followers box probably won't be supported anymore... oops!  (I have heard mixed thoughts about this... some people are saying the followers box will be staying.  I guess we'll have to wait and see!  Read here for Google's official post, and here for some thoughts on the matter) Basically, for anyone who hasn't read all of the posts circulating everyone else's blogs... you MUST make this switch before July 1, 2013 or you could risk losing all of the blogs you follow! Well, with this in mind, I decided to extend the poll for another week and write up an emergency post: how to continue to follow you favorite blogs!  It's a little bit of a nuisance at first, but hopefully the change will be for the b...

News About the New Series!

Yesterday we finally announced the new series I've been dying to tell everyone about. There was a nice little blurb on the NYT blog , but it didn't actually say much about the books themselves. So I'm going to tell you about them now. The new series is a YA paranormal romance trilogy called the Kanin Chronicles. If you read the Trylle trilogy (or if you're Scandinavian), you may be thinking that the word " Kanin " sounds familiar. As you may recall, the Kanin are another tribe of trolls, who are mentioned in the Trylle book but not really seen. You may also recall that in Ascend , Finn's mother and younger sister Ember were going to stay with relatives in the Kanin tribe. So putting those pieces together, you may feel its safe to assume that the Kanin Chronicles are a spinoff series from the Trylle about Ember Holmes. And in that you'd be both correct, and not correct. Ember is a part of the Kanin Chronicles, but the focus is actually on an entirely ne...

How to Add a Followers Box to Your Blog

Image
A few months ago, Blogger changed the built-in followers box option to one that uses Google Plus - but a lot of people have asked me over time how to add the original followers box that you see on most blogs.  Well... it took quite a bit of research but here it is! Here's the poll! I looked though and attempted so many different tutorials online for this... and I found the best one at Southern Speakers . I hadn't seen this website before but I suggest you check it out because it has a lot of great items! You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Drive.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! As for next week's tutorial, I'm going to add another Blogger option... how to make a "grab my button" code for your sidebar (similar to the one below)!

What makes a great Developer

Image
Passion It's the taste of success that comes with every little task that you've mastered, and smart solutions you've found that turn out advantageous. Programming is not just a job, it's an Art - it's Poetry. With Passion comes Motivation and thus Progress. Software development is not only huge, but also evolving very fast. A good developer enjoy's keeping up-to-date, since he knows that there's always a better way to do something. Learning new ways, satisfies his hunger. Curiosity A Program is deterministic. There is no such thing as an accident in a computers world. Every effect has its cause. A great developer does not accept accidents. He'd rather search and debug the numerous layers of a Software and it's environment to find the very reason. He builds up deep knowledge by doing that, allowing him to better understand, read and interpret weird behaviour of an application. A good developer does not program by Accident . “The important thing is not...

Raising Butterflies (with a HUGE surprise!!!)

Image
We just finished up our fun and exciting butterfly life cycle unit... we bought the caterpillar kit and watched them turn into butterflies.  The kids loved it! It was a really fun unit... we released our butterflies into the while and I thought we were done... \ UNTIL.... I looked in the butterfly container and saw hundreds of blue things.  "Blue what?" you ask!?  Blue EGGS!!!  I asked a bunch of people who have done this before (because of course this was my first time raising butterflies) and no one had that happen before.  Well... lo and behold, I get to school one morning last week and there are HUNDREDS of tiny caterpillar larva EVERYWHERE! You see those tiny black 2 millimeter big specs?  Well... they move. They are actually tiny little baby caterpillars! You wouldn't know it... but they are FAST.  Within a few hours, they were ALL OVER my desk.  I kid you not.  See those little buggers!? Today my para and I spent an hour collecting the...

Teaching Phonemic Awareness with Sight Words

Image
I have been meaning to make these activities for a while and I finally had the time to do it!  Every time I teach my class a new sight words, we always look at the phonemic sounds that go into it.  I decided to make task cards for a center game that will be sure to help reinforce the phonics that go into the sight words!  I made two sets of cards: pre-primer words and primer words. I can't wait to use this lesson plan with my Kindergarten students tomorrow!
