Zombies, Trolls, and Piercings, Oh My!

Image
I love 28 Days Later . It's my favorite zombie movie (George Romero fans everywhere a calling a Judas). Part of the reason that I enjoy it as much as I do is probably because it was such an intense viewing experience for me the first I saw it. I'd just gotten a snug piercing. This is a rook piercing The "snug" piercing is the the thick part. Not the three ones in the lobe. I love 28 Days Later. It's my favorite zombie movie (George Romero fans everywhere a calling a Judas). Part of the reason that I enjoy it as much as I do is probably because it was such an intense viewing experience for me the first I saw it. I'd just gotten a snug piercing. The snug piercing was the most painful thing I've ever done, yet stupidly, I went on to get a rook piercing a few months later.(I'd always thought they were both rooks, but in research just now, I discovered they were different things. I was also unable to find a picture of of anyone that had a rook &

Lullaby is Out!

Image
Yes, it's true. Lullaby - the second book in the Watersong series - is available now. The first print run is signed (as I mentioned in this post: here ), so that's pretty cool, too. My life-size cardboard cutout of Bane is showing off the fact that his bicep is as large as my book. I'm also going to be doing some giveaways and other fun things over the next couple weeks, so keep an eye out. Right now I'm doing a giveaway on a Twitter, so be sure to enter if you're following me there. If you don't have Twitter, fret not, I'll be doing more things on my blog and on Facebook.   If you're interested in getting Lullaby , go: here for all the links and places to get in ebook or hardcover. The first chapter of Lullaby is available to read: here , (and here's the first chapter for Wake if you haven't read that yet). You can also check out the soundtrack for Lullaby : here . And if you've already Lullaby and are chomping at the bit for the next

WEF Profiling Explained

Image
Profiling is a frequently misunderstood concept in web experience factory. This blog entry describes profiling by comparing it to java code, something that more developers are familiar with. Comparing Profiles to Java Code Many people struggle with the concept of profiling and profile sets, but it can be closely compared to a conditional statement in java. Suppose that we have a button that needs to be displayed if the application is accessed from an android device. Coding this using java would look something like this (depending on the framework): if (request.getHeader("User-Agent") == "android"){    button.visible = true; } The same can be accomplished with WEF profiling except we don't have any code to work with, only a button builder with inputs. Ideally, we would want to apply the results of profiling to the builder enable input, setting it to true or false which would effectively replicate what the java code above does. Think of a profile set as a collecti

How to Add Another Website's Photo to Your Blog! (Without HTML)

Image
This week's technology tutorial is one that is surprisingly very easy... how to add another website's photo to your blog (without HTML!).  I love using this trick when I do linky parties or when I link to someone else's blog (if they don't have the HTML code poster for a blogger button, that is!) This won the poll, but only by a little bit! Check out the finished product here: Be sure to check out Dana's blog while you're here.... she has some great ideas and great items! Also, please note that I used the tutorial above to add the image, but I had to add the link to her website manually!  The only thing the tutorial copies is the image, not the hyperlink!  You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! For next week's poll, I'll add another blogger option... how to add a facebook "li

Winners, Trailers, & Lullaby Stuff

Image
Lullaby is coming out tomorrow in the US (and I believe it will be out December 6th in the UK). The contest for copies of Wake and Lullaby has ended, and the winners are being notified (so watch your email if you entered). Thanks to everyone who entered! So, since Lullaby is officially going to be born, I thought I'd do some fun facts and little known secrets behind the Watersong series. But first here is the brand-new trailer for Lullaby : *Alex's character was almost named Fitzwilliam. It was REALLY close. I've always wanted to name a character Fitzwilliam, and Alex seemed the right balance of awkward and sweet to carry a name like that. But in the end, I thought it would it would be too distracting and pull people out of the story every time they read, so I went with the more basic Alex. *The Watersong series is a quartet, and there is emphasis on the number 4 throughout the books. Some are more obvious than others. Like how there's four sisters, and Penn, Thea,

Hurricane Sandy, Thinking Maps, and a Sale!

Image
Being from NY, a lot of my students were exposed to the damage of Hurricane Sandy.  Many lost power, and some had family in the hard-hit areas.  I needed a way to explain the storm to my class and to help them cope with what happened.  I put together this Prezi for them, and I know the storm is passed, but it's a great way to explain to your class what others are still going through. Click this picture to see the free presentation! The presentation incorporates a lot of thinking maps, which are fancy graphic organizers that I am absolutely loving right now!  If you use this program, you know how amazing it is!  I put together a set of visuals and worksheets for the thinking maps which you can check out at TPT by clicking the picture below! That product will be included in the upcoming Cyber Monday and Tuesday TPT sale... check out what other items will be discounted from my store (all of them!) by clicking the picture below!

Great Shopping Deals Year Round (Not Just Black Friday!)

Image
So I know this deal has absolutely nothing to do with teaching... but hey, teachers deserve to get some great shopping deals, right?  And, since today is Black Friday, I'm sure this is the exactly what's on everyone's mind! (Well, it's on my mind at least!) Obviously everyone knows about Amazon, but do you know that you can easily find the price history of any item on Amazon to tell if you're getting a good deal or not?! First things first, head to Amazon, and pull up an item that you are interested in.  I pulled up Avery 5160 Labels... my favorite! :) Copy the link from your address bar (e.g.: http://www.amazon.com/Avery-Address-Labels-Printers-08160/dp/B00004Z5SM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1353641122&sr=8-2&keywords=avery+5160+labels ).  You can copy the link by choosing Edit > Copy, or by doing Control + C on a PC, or Command + C on a Mac. Next, visit the website http://camelcamelcamel.com .  You can head there by clicking the picture below! In the to

Change the Capitalization of Your Text with Ease!

Image
This tip is probably the one I use the most!  Do you ever need to change your text to capitalize it?  e.g.:from "happy thankgiving!" to "Happy Thanksgiving!" to "HAPPY THANKSGIVING!"  It's actually surprisingly easy to do! This tip works the best in Microsoft Word. It will work to some extent in PowerPoint, but instead of doing "Title Case," it will capitalize the words as if they were in a sentence.  It's definitely a nice trick if you want to change the way your text is capitalized! By the way, Happy Thanksgiving!!!  I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

How to Make an Editable PowerPoint and Lock Down Clipart

This was a close one in the poll! Now, onto the tutorial! You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! You can also download those editable labels for free by clicking the picture below!    Again, this file is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your

HTML Tags | Adding Scripts in HTML

Adding Scripts in HTML (i.e. JavaScript, Action script and others) requires the use of opening and closing <script> tags. The script is entered between theses tags. Here is an example: <script> //this is just an example for adding scripts $(document).ready(function(){ $(‘h1’).click(function(){ $(this).addclass(‘.animate’) }); }); </script> To included external script files we have to included the ‘src’ attribute in the script tags like so <script src=http:/faqwebdevelopmenet.js type=”text/javascript”></script> In the above HTML code the ‘src’ attribute specifies the source location of the script file and type attribute specifies the type of script being used. (Note: in HTML5 you don’t need to specify the type attribute the browsers will automatically understand the type of script).

HTML Tags | Adding a link in HTML

Image
Adding a link in HTML is fairly simple all we need to do is add the file location and link title in between the opening and closing <a> tags. like this: <a href="http://fawwebdevelopment.blogspot.com">Link to my Blog</a> The above code will be rendered in a browser like this: After adding the above code the browser will change appearance of the link, the text color will be changed to blue and text will be also underlined this is the default behavior by browsers to indicate links. To style this links to appear the way you want please read the tutorial on “how to style links”. In the HTML Code “ <a href="http://faqwebdevelopment.blogspot.com">Link to my Blog</a> ” <a> stands for Anchor text , “href” attribute specifies the file path .

Exciting News, Free Stuff, & a Couple Giveaways

I’m always looking for ways to make each new release fun and a little bit different. The second book in the Watersong series, Lullaby, will be out November 27, 2012, and I wracked my brain for a way to say thank you to fans and make the release special. Here's what I've come up with. The first is a special short story Forgotten Lyrics set in the Watersong world. Forgotten Lyrics is $1.99 wherever eBooks are sold, but as a special treat for my fans you can read it HERE free of charge for a very limited time. It's already been free for a few days, and I think it only has a couple days left, so check it out free while you can. And now to the NEW exciting news. The entire first printing of the new Lullaby hardcover will feature a special collector’s signature. As a reader I love adding signed books to my collection and wanted to do that for people who buy my book. But signing thousands of books would be tough, especially when I am working on Elegy , the final book in the se
