Product Codes for IBM Software

In many past instances I've been really confused by the download process for IBM Passport. Searching for the correct download package is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. This week I stumbled on a page I had been looking for, here is a link to the product codes for WebSphere Portal 8: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/portalwiki.nsf/xpDocViewer.xsp?lookupName=IBM WebSphere Portal 8 Product Documentation#action=openDocument&res_title=Electronic_images_wp8&content=pdcontent

Hollowland Graphic Novel

Image
As you may recall, I mentioned that my zombie series The Hollows was being adapted into a graphic novel. For the past several months, I have been working with Dynamite Comics and writer Tony Lee and artist Steve Uy, and now it's finally being released as Amanda Hocking's The Hollows: A Hollowland Graphic Novel , and I think it turned out pretty fantastic. Now I am going to answer a few questions that you may have. What's the deal with it? Welcome to the world of the best selling novel Hollowland as never seen before - adapted and enhanced by #1 New York Times bestseller Tony Lee ( X-Men Unlimited, Doctor Who ), with superb artwork by Steve Uy ( Avengers Initiative, JSA Classified ). It's Day One as a new pandemic sweeps the globe, and all over the world people are turning into mindless zombies. But for five people - siblings Remy and Max King, med student Blue Adams, rockstar Lazlo Durante and teenager Harlow Smith - it's the start of a journey that they can never

How to Make Clipart From Your Own Drawings!

Image
This is a question that people also put on the Technology Tuesday request form... so I knew it would be popular with the polls!  Teachers always ask me how they can make their own clipart using their pictures... so here it is (finally, I know!) Here was the poll: Now, for the tutorial!         I know it seems like a lot, but so many of the steps are optional and/or just for troubleshooting purposes!  It's definitely not as hard as it looks! You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Drive.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! As for next week's tutorial, I'm going to add something that a few people have asked me for: how to open ZIP files.  Be sure to vote!

Books for the Red Cross

Most of you have probably seen the devastation from the tornado in Oklahoma. The footage of the tornado, and the total destruction left behind it is so completely mind boggling, I can't begin to fathom how the people affected by the disaster are coping. To help out, I am auctioning off books on eBay with 100% of the proceeds going to the Red Cross to help the disaster relief. I have three different sets of books available at eBay: Autographed Paperbacks of the entire Trylle series - Switched, Torn , and Ascend Autographed Paperbacks of Wake and Lullaby Autographed Hardcovers of Wake, Lullaby, and Tidal If you're not interested in the books, I would still encourage to donate or help in any way you can. Here are few places that you can help: Regional Food Bank American Red Cross Salvation Army  Shelter Box You can also text STORM to 80888 to donate $10 to the Salvation Army, REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross,  and FOOD to 32333 to donate $10 to the Regional Food

What Did They Say!? Wednesday! (A Linky Party!)

Image
My kids have spring fever!  Today was the ultimate day of "I'm telling!"  (Ugh... I thought we stopped that behavior back in October but someone it crept back into the classroom today!)  Regardless, the kids still had cute things to say! <div align="center"><a href="http://aturntolearn.blogspot.com/" title="What Did They Say!?"><img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-OIhmtxluCS0/ULwEfazkl1I/AAAAAAAADpM/MMMzxm23B0Y/s320/What+Did+They+Say+Wednesday.png" alt="What Did They Say!?" style="border:none;" /></a></div> Here is my funny story for the week! Now, before I tell the story, let me give you some background on the boy: he always says cute things but they're usually very basic responses: short sentences that are very literal. Anyway, we were at the computer lab the other day and one of my kinders asked if he could watch the Abraham Lincoln video on Brain Pop Jr.  He had literally watc

Technology Tuesday Postponed! :(

Okay, okay... time to laugh at me.  It's technically time for technology tuesday, but technology is doing all it can to work against me today (and yesterday, for that matter!)  Yes... even those of us who eat, sleep, and breathe technology can have major tech problems!  Ugh! Right now my internet is so slow it feels like I have dial up again (oh my gosh... remember those days!?), and it keeps kicking me off every five minutes.  On top of it, my files are all stored over a network, and it is so slow that the connection times out before my files even open.  I have reset everything what feels like a million times but after an hour straight of playing with it I'm thinking that it's time to call Verizon and have them walk me through it.  Guess that's how I'll be spending all of tomorrow night.  Ugh.  Sorry everyone... I know that this week's winner was very popular on the poll but I guess it will have to wait for now :(

The Art of Naming

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 public class Handler { private String data ; private String temp ; public int c ( int a , int a2 ){ int result = a + a2 ; //... Why is Naming so important? Because its a matter of Quality. Naming = Readability = Understandability = Maintainability = Quality. Good Names make your code readable, which is an essential feature for every person that has to work on it, including yourself. Soon after written, you'll forget about the details. Getting into it and understanding again can be tough and frustrating. The right Names will redeem yourself and others from those barriers. You'll might think for yourself: "No!!! I don't have the time to make this all clean and perfect. I just have to get the thing done as fast as possible, and it's no problem because i won't have to deal with it after its finished anyways..." - That's just wishful thinking. Software never ever becomes completed. Thats part of it

Phonics Worksheets Mega-Pack, Soft C Freebie, and a Giveaway!

Image
I had to do report cards this weekend... so of course it was time for some major procrastinating!  I decided to "cute up" some items for RTI for my struggling students.  I mostly have to focus on beginning short vowel sounds with a few of my little ones, but of course, I was on a roll, so I decided to re-vamp the whole alphabet!  Here's the whole set of letters... with a whopping 13 pages per letter!!! Since I really only need to review phonics for short vowels with a handful of students, I decided to print these pages in a binder and use dry-erase markers for  those targeted for Response to Intervention!  I printed it on colorful paper since it was almost all black and white ink... and I LOVE how it looked (as did the kids!)  Check it out below! And of course, next year, I'll be using many of the worksheets earlier in the year when I teach phonics.  Now that I have so many cute worksheets for phonics, I kind of wish I taught a Letter of the Week, but I know I wouldn&

How to Give Yourself Writer's Block

I get this question a lot: "How do you get over writer's block?" But I decided to do the opposite and write a blog called "How do you create writer's block?" It occurred to me to write this because I was feeling creative, about to do some work, and then managed to completely kill it. So here are some tips on how to stifle the creative juices: -Read reviews, of your own books perferably, particulary negative reviews, although positive cans freak you out, too. If somebody loved one of your books, it means that your next book has to be even better, because nothing's worse than taking somebody who loves you and turning them into somebody who hates you. Oh, and confuse your books for yourself. When somebody says, "I didn't like this book," they really mean, "I didn't like you, the author, and I think you, the author, are terrible and awful and this review is totally personal." -Read reviews of other books (or films or poems), espe

The Countdown to Tidal

Image
According to the countdown I have on my phone, it's only 17 more days until Tidal comes out (and only 80 more days until the final book in the series Elegy is out). I plan on having lots of stuff about Tidal and the Watersong series over the next 17 days. And I'm starting with this - the new book trailer for Tidal: Also, check out this awesome widget. You can add it to your blog/site, and it'll make it easier to keep you up-to-date on all everything going on with the Watersong .  Plus, it looks cool.

Make Cute Center Cards Easily!

Image
The other week I posted a tutorial on how to make your own center cards, and I realized that each time I make center games I always start from scratch!  I figure it would be much easier to make my own cards if I had a super cute template for them... so I took one of my cutesy frames and reformatted it 24 times to make it fit perfect in 24 different sized center card templates!  It was well worth the effort since I think I made a million new cards already! (Okay, okay... I only made a few sets... but it took way less time than usual!) I have these cards up on TPT, and they're on sale today only for 20% off!  In the meantime, the first two people to comment will win them for free!

What Did They Say Wednesday!?

Image
First of all, my apologies for my mistakes the past two Wednesdays - two weeks ago there was an issue with the linky party that wouldn't allow anyone to link up, and by the time I realized it, it was too late.  Last week, I thought I scheduled a post but apparently I didn't... oops! One of my girls took permanent marker and wrote on her backpack, "Stop with the atood (attitude) in my house."  Of course, I needed to ask her about this and I was so worried for what she was going to say.  I asked her about it and she said, "It's my dog!  He always has such bad attitud

How to Crop a Photo in PowerPoint!

Image
It's Tuesday again... and it's shockingly much earlier in the night than my typical Technology Tuesday post!  The winner for this week's poll is a nifty option that is sure to save you some time when you create your own items! Here are the poll results: Now, for the tutorial! You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! As for next week's poll, I'm going to add how to turn your hand drawn images into clipart.  I had a few people request this a while back and I promise I didn't forget about you!  I've been keeping an ongoing list of things to add to the poll eventually and I will eventually get to all of them!!!

An Addendum to Yesterday's Post

Yesterday, I wrote this blog: My Reaction to the Gender Coverup , and in reaction to this piece by Maureen Johnson - The Gender Coverup - and also this piece by Deborah Copaken Kogan , and even this older post by Claudia Gray - "I'm not like other girls. " I absolutely stand by everything in the blog I wrote, but I want to clarify a few things. The first thing is something that Kiersten White mentioned on Twitter . She pointed out - rightfully - that she writes books for teen girls, so her book jackets are marked for teen girls, and that's okay. In fact, that's as it should be. Book covers should be marketed to your audience, and hers - like mine - is predominately female, and predominately teen. There is nothing wrong with covers like hers or mine, or pink covers, or ones with sparkles and unicorns and lollipops and puppies, if you are writing a book about those things for an audience that likes those things. And because you write for teen girls as opposed to adu

A Tracer Bullet might get thrown away, but it is not intended to in the first place. It is developed as stable, clean and complete as needed, to use it for real production. How to Erase to Reveal Hidden Text/Images in Smart Notebook

Image
This week's poll as a nail biter, but I am so excited to finally blog about an option that's been on the poll for a while... how to erase to reveal hidden text/images in Smart Notebook!  I love all these Smart Notebook tricks! Here are the (incredibly close!) poll results: Here's the tutorial! :) You can download this tutorial as a PDF by clicking this picture! Note: This tutorial is hosted on Google Docs.  To save it from there, just open the file and click File > Download to save onto your computer! I'm adding two new options to this week's poll since I didn't add any last week: how to crop an image in PowerPoint and how to click to reveal a hidden image in Smart Notebook!

My Reaction to the Gender Coverup

I'm writing this post, and I'm angry. I usually try not to write things when I'm angry, but right now, I don't care. I just read this blog - The Gender Coverup written by Maureen Johnson, and now I'm pissed off. What pisses me off even further, is that I nearly used the modifier "lovely" to describe Maureen Johnson, and it's not that she's not lovely, but it makes me angry that my natural inclination to describe her wasn't "friendly" or "smart" or "incomparable" or any other ten million words that don't have female connotations to it, and I realize once again that I'm part of the problem. I very rarely weigh in on the issue of gender bias books because I think that if I say something, people will just point that my books suck, and recognition or lack thereof has nothing to do with gender but merit, and maybe they're right. Not that my books suck, but I do believe that while my books are enjoyable and f

Less Than a Month

It's less than a month until Tidal comes out, so I'm basically going crazy at this point. I cannot wait for you guys to read it. I'm doing a Watersong Book Club over at Wattpad where I'm discussing the first two books in the series, so if you want a refresher or have questions or want to check out other bonus info, stop by Wattpad . Also, the first several chapters of Wake and Lullaby are up there, along with all of the short story Forgotten Lyrics .The latest update on the bookclub is Character Inspiration - Daniel . I just finished up edits on Elegy , the last book in the Watersong series, so it's fun and a bit strange to be doing the book club now, and going back over the beginning of the series. All the pieces really come together in the end.

What Did They Say!? Wednesday! (A Linky Party!)

Image
As teachers, I'm pretty sure we could write a novel with all of the funny things our kids say each week!  But... since I don't know a publisher, I host this weekly linky party with all of the funny things students are the world are saying! One of the prizes in the treasure chest is a toy compass... it spins around but doesn't actually point north. One of my boys took this prize today and went to put it in his backpack. Not two minutes later, he said: "Ms. Jessica, this compass works good!" Me: "Really? what do you mean?" Boy: "It helped me get to my cub
