Kindergarten Problem Solving Skills! (Freebies!)

Image
A while back I wrote about a routine that I do in my classroom called "The Problem of the Day."  I use this to help develop problem solving skills from the beginning of the school year!  I just finished making the set for the beginning of the school year and bundling it! The Daily Routine: I pick a student to be in the problem, and replace the name in the story with their name. Then, I have the students turn to their partner (I have assigned partners in the classroom which change monthly.)  I tell the class this little poem: I'll pick a partner to go first (perhaps the partner with longer/shorter hair).  That partner has to tell their partner the answer and explain their reasoning for it.  For example, "I know the answer is two because I started with five fingers up, then put three fingers back down.”  I count backwards from five so the students finish up their answer. Next: it's time to see who was listening!  I call on students to explain their partn...

Help Your Students Work on Teen Numbers and Introduce Coins!!!

Image
I do this fun lesson with my kids every year, and they just love it!  This year, I revamped the lesson with some tens-frames to really help students grasp basic coin value! I usually start the lesson reading a book about pennies and talking about how pennies are worth one cent.  Then of course I model how to count pennies into the tens frames.  I place a card at each students seat at the table, and have them go to their seats and count out that many pennies. Then, comes the fun part... the dancing!  I have the students dance around to room, usually to an instrumental of some popular song... last year it was Party Rock Anthem , this year it was Gangham Style !  When the music stops, they have to find a chair and count out that many pennies! They just love it... and it's the perfect way to introduce counting pennies to a kindergartener while reviewing numbers 11-20! You can grab this item, as well as all of my other items, for 28% off today only!!! The above butto...

Math Manipulative Labels!

Image
The thing that I love about my math manipulatives is that the organization system is so simple that my Kindergarteners clean them up all on their own!  When the leprechaun visited us last St. Patrick's Day, my little ones put back all of the manipulatives that he took out perfectly!   I just updated my Math Manipulative set to add a second option for printing (a different font and my cute black border which is a freebie).  I love how the update came out! Help Your Students Write Numbers!

Image
Looking ahead to my September curriculum, one of our Kindergarten topics is Numbers 0-10.  I decided to revamp my current number posters and make them a bit fancier looking, and this was the result!  I'm really pleased with how they came out!  I made them in color and in black and white, and in three different sizes so you can pick which set words best for you... the set is $2.50 at TPT . I also made the borders myself, so keep your eye out for those in the near future!  One of the sizes is below... on a full sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper. Another one of the sizes is below... with two labels on a sheet of paper. Another option is to have four labels on a sheet of paper. All three sizes are in color and black and white!  And I plan on creating another set for numbers 11-20 over the summer as well!  Enjoy!

Addition/Subtraction Key Word Posters & June Problem of the Day

Image
In class lately, we've been working on the key words that tell us to add or subtract when we hear a word problem.  I made some cute posters for these and figured I'd share them in both color and black/white.  Each pair of posters is $1... and obviously much higher quality than the preview image below!  Click each of the pictures to check them out! On another note, how is it June already?  I know I'm a bit late on this one... but here is the Problem of the Day for June/July! If you want to read about the routine, head on over here .  Otherwise, the routine and everything you need to start it is included in the free TPT item!  Click either picture to download! Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you enjoy the new items!  I'm linking up with Manic Monday again... be sure to head there for other great free items!

The Problem of the Day: An Easy Math Routine

Image
If you didn't read my April post about the problem of the day, you can get all of the information about how I do the routine by clicking the picture below! This is one of my favorite routines because it's quick, easy, and tons of fun! In April, I focused on subtraction, but this month's set of questions includes both addition and subtraction word problems.  This will help the students work on whether they need to add or subtract when they hear a math story.  We focus on whether the story gets bigger or smaller, and on the key words in the story! I'm going to keep this post short to give you time to read up on the original post with the details about the routine! Download the new questions for the problem of the day by clicking the picture below! This freebie is linked up with Manic Monday! Head over there to check out some other wonderful freebies!
